Young Talent Shines in the 2025 Northwest Phone Photography Competition

The natural beauty and vibrant spirit of the Northwest have once again sparked creativity in a new generation, as the winner of the 2025 Northwest Phone Photography Competition has been revealed. Open to young people aged 12–18 across the region, this year’s contest drew over 250 impressive submissions—each capturing a unique story through the lens of a smartphone.

After careful consideration by a panel of expert judges, Klaus Thomas from CHS South was named the overall winner, earning a £100 prize and regional recognition for his striking photograph.

Judges commended Henry’s work for its “incredible mood and atmosphere,” with one judge noting, “This image looks like it was taken by someone far beyond their years, in both skill and creative vision.”

Now in its first year, the Northwest competition was created to encourage young people to explore photography using the devices they carry every day—their phones. Organisers were thrilled with the high quality of entries, which ranged from sweeping landscapes and snapshots of urban life to expressive portraits and abstract views of everyday moments.

“There’s no shortage of creative talent among young people in the Northwest,” said lead judge Conor Mulloy. “What really stood out was the diversity—not just technically strong photos, but emotionally powerful and often daring visual storytelling.”

Alongside Klaus’s winning entry, a selection of standout photos from other students appears below as part of this year’s shortlist.

The 2025 competition proved that, with just a phone and a strong vision, young voices can make a powerful impact.

Following this year’s success, the Northwest Phone Photography Competition will return in 2026 with an extended entry period, giving students even more time to shoot and refine their best work. To stay updated, follow us on Instagram or join our mailing list.
